Even a large window fails as egress if the well outside is too small, too deep without a ladder, or blocked by a cover that cannot open from inside.
Well & cover planning checklist
- Floor area and projection that meet RCO / IRC well baselines (commonly 9 ft² and 36 in)
- Ladder or steps when well depth exceeds about 44 inches
- Drainage so stormwater does not fill the well
- Covers/grates releasable from inside without keys or tools
